2001 Audi S4

Video of me drag racing my car. 13's on stock chip!
Video of me autocrossing, snap oversteer... oops.
My dyno graph. Stock chip and catback only.

This is the car that I currently drive now, I got it in June of 2001, a little while before I sold my Camaro. From most people's standpoint, it's a pretty regular car. 4 door sedan, nothing really special, interior is kinda nice but geez, why the hell did you buy such a soccer-mom mobile???

Well, it just looks like a soccer-mom mobile but it's actually quite fast for what it is. It's a 2.7L V6, with twin turbos, all-wheel-drive and a 6-speed manual. I drag race it and autocross it quite often and it's really a wolf in sheep's clothing. It runs the quarter mile as fast as a new Mustang GT would and handles a bit under the limit of the BMW M3's. I put the car on a dyno, which measures how much horsepower the car makes and I pulled 205 horsepower and 250 lb/ft of torque at the wheels. At 25% drivetrain loss, that translates into 273 horsepower and 333 lb/ft of torque at the engine. Audi claims 250 horsepower and 258 lb/ft of torque stock. The dyno was done only with a catback exhaust.

Disclaimer: The following information might look like a foreign language to you if you don't have much interest in cars. Just skip it if you could care less about what I did to my car.

Best Timeslip:

13.49 @ 100.5mph, 1.76 sixty foot.
With all the mods listed below. Street tires.

13.95 @ 98.5mph, 1.82 sixty foot.
With ONLY the catback exhaust, short shifter, and bypass valves (stock chip). Street tires.

Modifications:

Valentine 1: I don't know how anybody can survive on the public highways without this radar detector. Ever since I got it, I feel so naked driving around without the thing! My advice to anyone who speeds at all when they drive: BUY THIS! You can purchase it online only at Valentine1.com. It is $400 for the basic unit but it's well worth it if you consider how much a speeding ticket is and the insurance that goes up for you from that speeding ticket. For most people, that would be more than $400.

GIAC X chip: The single modification that can increase your horsepower really significantly. The X chip is the newest chip from Garrett, and it runs about 17psi compared to the stock 10psi on the turbos. Horsepower and torque numbers are claimed to be at 320HP (with a catback) and about 360ft/lbs of torque. I think those numbers are pretty inflated but I don't have access to a 4 wheel dyno so I can't prove anything.
I have removed this chip because I blew my turbos and don't want that to happen again. I can't blame it on the chip, but I figure it had something to do with it.

Borla catback exhaust: Nothing special at all, just a way overpriced catback because it's made for an Audi. At ~$600, it is also the cheapest catback exhaust for the S4. This is what sucks about owning one of these cars, mods are ALWAYS overpriced.

Bailey bypass valves: The stock BPV's are known to fail, especially with a chip that puts out more boost. To be on the safe side, I put these BPV's on and they've been working fine. No actual performance boost, just peace of mind really.

UUC shortshifter: Audi cannot make a shifter for shit, period. The shifters in these cars are sloppy and have tons of play in it. So to try and help the problem, I put in a shortshifter to see if things will firm up a bit and take out some slack from the shifter. I have my shifter set at -40% throw reduction and things are a bit more solid and less rubbery, but the shifter is still crap compared to BMW and S2000 shifters.

Intrax / Koni Motorola Cup kit: Fancy name for a shocks / springs combo. Single adjustable Konis set on 75% stiff, and Intrax springs that are supposedly matched to the shocks. A bit bouncy for my tastes, but the ride is not bad. I would've gone Bilsteins or some adjustable coilovers if I were to do it again.

Neuspeed 19mm rear sway bar: A pretty nice mod actually. The stock S4 understeers pretty bad, and even with the shocks / springs combo above, I still had a good amount of understeer. So I added just the rear swaybar and it has helped a lot in making the car handle a bit more neutrally. Not only that, but it does make the car turn considerably flatter too. This swaybar comes with a "hard" and "soft" setting. I would strongly advise people considering this mod to set it to the soft setting. Check out my autocrossing video above to see how the car can easily snap oversteer with this swaybar set on hard. It is a situation that you could easily encounter on the streets when avoiding an accident or object in the road.

Fikse FM/5 wheels: The most expensive mod to my car ever! One set of wheels! I love these wheels though, simple design, looks good, and they are really strong. Specs are 18" x 8.5" ET 32 with spacer, 3-piece forged aluminum, 19lbs a piece. They're wrapped with 235/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sports.

Blacked out grille: I was really bored one day so I decided to paint the audi rings and the trim around my grille flat black. Stock they come chrome, and those were just a bit to bling bling for me so I blacked them out so there wouldn't be too much chrome on it. I don't know if the paint will last well through rock chips and stuff but it's something real easy to do so I can just repaint them if they start looking really crappy after a while.

Motorola V60 professional hands free integration: A nice mod for a manual. It took me about 10 hours to install by myself with a lot of work in trying not to wreck the interior. I have the cradle for the phone mounted in an area where I can cover it up later, because I drilled a 3/4" hole to accept the cradle. I used the stock cell phone speaker in the door, and used the Motorola mic. I wired it into the car's stock cell phone mic but I sounded like crap on the other end, the motorola mic works much better. I did not hook up the automute function of the cradle because my aftermarket stereo does not have this function. This kit requires an external antenna, but I mounted it on the rear deck of the interior, reception is fine.

Window tint: Not a mod, but it's another thing where once you have it, you hate not having it. Again, it feels so naked driving around without tint on the windows. I have 22% on every window except the windshield so at least it's hard to see into the car. Just one of those "can't live without" things. I got a ticket for the fronts a while ago but it was signed off for me by one of my buddies. :)
